LASIK – Safety and Accuracy with No Metal Blade
Most patients are pleasantly surprised to find that at Loden Vision Centers, LASIK is 100% all-laser. Unlike traditional LASIK, where the first step is to create a flap with a handheld metal blade called a microkeratome, LASIK at Loden Vision is 100% blade-free. While traditional LASIK with a blade is outdated, some surgeons still use this technique.
Always at the forefront of technology and innovation, it’s no surprise that Loden Vision Centers was the first in Tennessee to offer patients advanced LASIK for its safety and increased accuracy with no metal blade. Using lasers for every step of the procedure allows Dr. Loden and his team of LASIK experts unprecedented control and precision for outstanding visual outcomes. Additionally, as the first Tennessee LASIK surgeon to perform the procedure, Dr. Loden is also the most experienced LASIK surgeon in Tennessee.
Traditional vs. Bladeless LASIK
Traditional LASIK

In “old technique” or traditional LASIK, a handheld mechanical device called a microkeratome uses a metal blade to cut into the surface of the eye (the cornea) to create a flap. Unfortunately, this is how many surgeons still perform LASIK.
Bladeless LASIK

In blade-free LASIK, the metal blade is replaced with a laser called IntraLase. The IntraLase iFS™ Laser creates the flap in the first step of the procedure, with the safety and accuracy of a computer controlled, cold beam laser. This is a safe and predictable approach to laser vision correction.
FAQ
Will I need to wear glasses after LASIK?
Most patients who have LASIK with Dr. Loden or his team no longer need glasses or contacts for most activities. However, for those patients who are over 40, you may still need to wear reading glasses for up close and/or intermediate vision. This is due to a condition known as presbyopia, or aging of the eye, which is a part of the natural aging process regardless of whether or not you’ve had LASIK.
Will I have perfect vision?
The goal of LASIK is to reduce your dependence on glasses and contacts, although it’s not uncommon for Loden Vision Centers LASIK patients to see better than they ever had before. We cannot promise “perfect” vision and those patients over the age of 40 will still need to wear reading glasses due to the normal aging process of the eye. To achieve the best visual result, it is extremely important to choose the most experienced surgeon you can find, who uses the most advanced FDA-approved technology.

David Canfield reviewed Loden Vision Centers – 5 star
From day one I knew I made the right choice for my LASIK eye surgery. From friend’s recommendations to the young lady I first had contact with at the desk. Great group. Great service and surgery was a breeze. Dr. Loden and his staff are top notch. I can’t say enough great things. My Vision was dramatically different hours later. Everything was told to me and I continue to improve.
Thank you so much,
Sincerely,

About The LASIK Procedure
Is LASIK vision correction safe?
As with all surgical procedures, there are risks involved. In the hands of a highly trained, experienced surgeon using the most advanced technology, LASIK is a very safe procedure. Loden Vision Centers is pleased to offer our patients state-of-the-art VISX Star S4 technology, the IntraLase iFS™ laser, and CustomVue™ as part of the advanced all-laser LASIK procedure.
Which is more important, the surgeon or the technology?
Both are important. However, experts in the LASIK industry have agreed for years – LASIK is 90% surgeon and 10% technology.2 Before operating, a LASIK surgeon makes more than dozens of decisions for EACH EYE. Because our surgeons are LASIK Specialist, they insist on having technologies that enable them to perform personalized correction for each individual’s eyes.
Does LASIK vision correction hurt?
No. At Loden Vision Centers, you will be very comfortable during LASIK as there is no pain during this advanced vision correction procedure. We will numb your eyes with drops prior to the procedure and give you medication to help you relax, if you desire. After the procedure, most people report a slight irritation for a few hours, similar to having an eyelash in the eye. After the procedure, we will send you home to take a nap and then see you in our office the next day for your first postoperative visit.
How long does LASIK vision correction take?
LASIK is a state-of-the-art procedure, which requires minimal time for the patient. The actual vision correction procedure lasts under 10 minutes per eye. You are awake and comfortable during this brief outpatient procedure. Most of our patients enjoy great improvement in their vision and are able to return to work and most other activities the very next day!
How soon can I get back to my normal activities?
Choosing to have LASIK won’t put your life on hold. Most of our patients see 20/20 and resume their normal daily activities, like driving, going to work, reading, working on the computer, and watching TV, the very next day.
Choosing A LASIK Surgeon
What do I look for in a LASIK surgeon?
It’s important to select the most experienced LASIK surgeon you can find, who uses the most up-to-date, advanced technology. The surgeons from Loden Vision have performed over 100,000 procedures, and they are all individually dedicated to providing their patients the safest and most advanced LASIK technology available today. As a result, the LASIK surgeons at Loden Vision Centers have helped 99% of patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after LASIK.1 Additionally, as recognized leader in his field, Dr. Loden is the only surgeon in Tennessee certified by the Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Group.
Bladeless LASIK vs. Traditional LASIK
What are the benefits of Bladeless LASIK versus traditional LASIK?
Replacing the metal blade with a laser considerably increases the accuracy of the procedure and can minimize certain complications that can happen when a blade is used to create the flap. Because the flap is created with the accuracy of a cool beam laser, Dr. Loden and his team are able to create the flap with more predictability and precision than ever before.3 Plus, with LASIK, your procedure will be 100% personalized for your eyes leading to outstanding outcomes.
How is LASIK personalized for my eyes?
Just like no two fingerprints are identical, no two eyes are identical either. Because every patient’s eyes are unique, in order to get the best results, your LASIK treatment must be as well. With LASIK, we’re able to take a “fingerprint” or map of your eyes that measures abnormalities that cannot be treated by either traditional LASIK technology or glasses or contacts. In fact, this map is 25 times more accurate than a typical vision test performed when you get glasses or contact lenses. This unique map is used during your treatment for a truly customized procedure and outstanding visual results. In fact, many LASIK patients report better vision than they had with their glasses and contacts!
Who is a candidate for LASIK
LASIK has been approved to correct a broad range of vision imperfections, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Generally, patients who meet the age and health requirements are good candidates for LASIK. However, it’s critical to undergo a comprehensive eye examination to determine if LASIK is right for you. At Loden Vision Centers, we offer a FREE* LASIK consultation along with a thorough examination prior to your procedure. During these examinations, you will meet with our friendly staff and our team of highly trained and experienced eye care experts, including your LASIK surgeon.
What is my next step?
While LASIK vision correction is popular, not everyone qualifies. Your next step is to schedule a FREE* evaluation to find out if you are a candidate. Use our convenient online scheduler or call (615) 559-4242 to book your appointment today.
